PHASES second event was to be the first of a four-show series. PHASES 2O2O: An Exploration of the Seasons | Winter began the odyssey of not just one moon, but many.
Stimulated by the season’s themes, we wanted the artwork for our winter show to be both playful and moody. We paired bright white costumes with a midnight blue environment, shooting our dancers on a seamless background to create an enchanting atmosphere that could satisfy various promotional purposes.
The hero image was inspired by the music video “Set it Off” by Diplo. The video shows dancers on a pole in space. I imagined our performers dancing carefree in a winter flurry. Laurel pitched in with the necessary post work to bring the vision to life with our designer Alison.
To promote our performers as individuals, I was drawn to the knowledge that each and every snowflake is unique.
We paired photos of our cast with copy based on their words via questionnaires that urged them to dig into their emotions and experiences of the season.
The final creative touch for this exploration of the seasons, was the intentional use of a capital O instead of the numeral 0 in 2O2O. This was used in all aspects of design and promotion, meant to reiterate the importance of the sphere.
We again provided a canvas on which our pole artists could create, giving them complete freedom to tell their personal stories.
Using their themes we curated a run-of-show that took the audience seamlessly and purposefully on a journey through winter: from celebratory and playful, to introspective and dark, and ultimately ending on a hopeful note, with spring on the horizon.
As with our first show, we produced art programs and a seamless audio experience to give the audience an immersive and artistic evening. We upgraded the affair with improved stage lighting, VIP seating, and a smoother encounter at entry and the bar.
