Eve Ensler, acclaimed author of The Vagaina Monologues, released the book I am an Emotional Creature, The Secret Lives of Girls Around the World in February 2010. The book is a collection of fictional monologues inspired by young girls’ struggles in society today. Many of the monologues connected strongly to the messages of MTV’s “It’s Your Sex Life” and “Digital Abuse” pro-social campaigns.
With the collaborative efforts of MTV, Eve Ensler, and the participation of actresses Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) and Rosario Dawson (Sin City), I worked to create an on-air campaign that brought these monologues to life and dove deeper into the text. The promos successfully brought awareness to subjects like safe sex, sexual pressure, digital and dating abuse.
I chose to shoot these raw, emotional promos against a simple, black seamless to create a serious tone and allow for an easy set up in the whirlwind of a day we had shooting in various locations around LA. In post, we added some playful graphic illustrations that were inspired by the book’s cover art to bring the power of youth and feminism to the campaign.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to facilitate a conversation between Eve Ensler and Rosario Dawson about subjects from the book. We captured sincere, ground-breaking dialogue about women and sex, power, and abuse.
As a young woman, I was honored and humbled to direct the project.
The campaign was recognized at the Creativity Media and Interactive Awards with a Platinum Honor for Public Service TV campaign.
